Kiwis in Berlin

In Berlin we stayed with Simon, Lena and Joseph. Simon was an old work-mate of Wim’s who had been living and working in Berlin for a year. The trip to Berlin had a surprising start with Holly accidentally sitting next to the only person she knew in Berlin, Lisa, a couch-surfer. This was unexpected for a city with the same size population as New Zealand. We got into Berlin’s culture and history by going on...
Altstadtfest Fest in Nuremburg

We found ourselves in Nuremberg at Altstadfest, an old-town festival. We made it to an old sailors choir, a rock covers band and a beer tent where some friendly locals got us to try some local sausages to go with some local beers. We noticed a drop in the amount of english speakers in this town and Köln compared to our previous destinations. It was time to learn a few phrases in Deutsch.
Rails in Frankfurt

When we were in Bergen we made friends with a couple from Frankfurt who invited us to stay in their home (Uli and Almuth). After organising to stay with them we found out there was a Rails Girls Frankfurt event on that weekend and so we signed ourselves up. Rails Girls is an organisation for getting girls interested in technology. The event we went to consisted of exercises showing how to set up a website...
Bruges

While in Antwerp we made sure to watch the movie In Bruges because we were heading to Bruges. Bruges lived up to it’s name as being a romantic city. It is made up of narrow cobble stone streets filled with chocolate stores. Most of our time here was spent walking the streats, doing general touristy stuff. We went on a canal boat trip, drank Belgium beer and went on a brewery tour of the De...
Port of Antwerp

After visiting Rotterdam, the largest port in Europe, we went to Antwerp, the second largest port in Europe. While we were there we went on a port tour to check out the local industry. In Antwerp we stayed with two girls (Nina and Karen) we met on our flight from Oslo to Amsterdam. Nina was seated next to us on the plane and really seemed to struggle with the changes in altitude. We weren’t sure...
